Biography of Master Gholamhossein Amirkhani

Gholamhossein Amirkhani, one of Iran’s prominent calligraphy masters, was born in 1318 SH (1939/1940) in Taleqan. From childhood, he had a strong interest in writing and learned to read and write in his early years. After his family moved to Tehran and later to Qazvin and Taleqan, he was able to continue his education, and he completed his elementary schooling in Tehran. His deep passion for the art of calligraphy led him to pursue this art seriously from a young age.

At the age of twenty, Amirkhani began studying calligraphy professionally under Master Seyyed Hossein Mirkhani and was strongly influenced by his moral and artistic character. He was one of the founding members of the Iranian Calligraphers Association in 1965 and soon became known as an instructor and later as a distinguished master of the association. He received the rank of Master Calligrapher in 1974 and the title of “Senior Master” in 1979, and he also served as the head of the Supreme Council of the Iranian Calligraphers Association.

This renowned master has written many valuable works in his enduring script, including Golestan of Saadi, Divan of Hafez, the Rubaiyat of Khayyam, and parts of Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh. He has also written numerous articles in the field of calligraphy and has played an important role in preserving and expanding this Iranian art. In recognition of his years of cultural and artistic activity, Amirkhani has received the First-Class Order of Culture and Art twice, as well as the title of a distinguished figure of Iran.
